Best Time to Visit Erg Chigaga: Season, Weather and Tips

Last reviewed: October 2026. Temperatures are approximate long-term averages, not forecasts.

Erg Chigaga sits in the Moroccan Sahara, so the right month matters. Our camp is open from September 1 to June 15 and closes in summer, when desert temperatures can pass 50°C. This guide shows what to expect month by month so you can choose the season that suits you.

Which season suits you?

  • October to April: the most comfortable months, with daytime highs of roughly 18–29°C. Pack warm layers for the evenings, especially from November to February.
  • September, May and June: noticeably hotter. They suit travellers who enjoy heat and want the dunes to themselves, but plan activities for early morning and late afternoon.
  • July and August: the camp is closed because of the heat.

Why the night sky matters

Erg Chigaga is far from towns and street lighting, so the stars are easy to see on clear nights. Stargazing is one of the optional extras we offer at the camp. See our activities page for the full list of what is included and what costs extra.
